Husband, father, educator, & web creative in Guilford, CT.
In 1997 I signed up for an account with a free web host and began using their WYSIWYG (“what you see is what you get”) site building tools to create my first web site. At the time, my high school had one computer in the school library that was connected to the web. One day, a friend and I hovered over that library computer as I eagerly showed him my site. “Check this out,” he said, as he opened a popular web site, clicked “View > Source,” pasted the HTML code into Notepad, changed some text, and launched the site locally. My mind was blown.
That night, I went home and started tinkering with HTML. For the next few years, I spent countless hours working on my online music zine (which we would probably call a blog today). I plugged away at learning more about HTML markup and figured out how to duct taped together some javascript. I learned about design by reading about modernism and Reid Miles. I wrote about music and found friends (both in person and online) to do the same. I met some of the musicians I admired most and later appreciated how patient they must have been answering the questions of an earnest but shy teenager.
That little site was far from being a media powerhouse, but it did have visitors from around the globe. I still find it incredible that as a suburban teenager in Pennsylvania, I was able to so easily publish my ideas and share them with the world. I was hooked.
Design & Code
While my knowledge and views of the web as a publishing platform have matured, I have not lost my eagerness to create. I like to think of myself as a technology optimist, who believes that modern technology can empower us to create as well as build meaningful connections with others. The web is my medium for creative expression, whether it be writing, designing, or developing. This site attempts to pull all of that together.
I love working with small & local business to design and develop web sites that look equally fantastic on a desktop computer as well as a smartphone or tablet device. If you’re interested in working with me, please visit the contact page.
Teaching
In 2006 I began teaching in New Haven, CT. I have had the pleasure to teach courses in digital media, web design, research & development, and print design at both the secondary and college level. My focus is on project based activities that provide students with authentic learning opportunities.
