Awkward Third-Person Bio

Adam Scott is a technology leader who believes in the power of the web to connect people and create opportunities—and he's passionate about helping others harness that same potential.

His journey started in 1997 when a friend showed him View Source in their high school library. Having access to the code behind web pages blew his mind, not just because of the technical possibilities, but because it revealed that the web was built on openness and shared knowledge. He spent his teenage years building websites, borrowing bits of code he liked to create his own projects, including a music site that somehow gained enough popularity to get him promotional CDs and concert guest lists.

Over the past 20 years, Adam has worked at the intersection of technology and education, leading engineering teams, teaching web development, and writing about the technologies he loves. Before transitioning fully into technology leadership, he spent seven years as a high school teacher, where he discovered his love for helping others unlock their potential. He's since taught as adjunct faculty at the University of Connecticut and other institutions, always finding ways to make complex technical concepts accessible to learners at every level. He's been fortunate to work on projects that serve millions of users, always with a focus on creating inclusive teams and accessible digital experiences that work for everyone.

Adam spent several years at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), where he most recentlyserved as Director of Digital Services and helped spearhead the adoption of open source, human-centered design, and product strategy.

Currently, Adam serves as Senior Director of Engineering at College Board, where he continues to lead engineering teams and drive digital transformation initiatives that impact students and educators nationwide.

As an author, Adam has written several books about JavaScript and web development for O'Reilly Media, including JavaScript Cookbook and JavaScript Everywhere. Whether he's leading a team, writing code, teaching, or authoring books, he's driven by the same thing that excited him as a teenager: the potential of technology to connect people and create opportunities for everyone.

Adam believes strongly in ethical software development, open-source initiatives, and building technology that serves everyone, not just those with privilege. The same technologies he was experimenting with 20+ years ago can now build powerful applications, and he's passionate about ensuring these tools are used to create positive change and expand opportunities for all.

Adam lives in Connecticut with his wife, three children, three cats, and two dogs. When he's not at his computer, you'll probably find him outdoors with his family, walking his dogs, or reading a good book—always looking for the next opportunity to learn something new and share it with others.
